Would 40mg Oxycontin carry over into a mothers milk and have effects on a 9 week old full term baby?

    Oxycontin

    Dear crw412,
Small amounts of Oxycontin (Oxycodone) are secreted in breastmilk. The relative infant dose is 3.5%. This means that 3.5% of the mother's dose can transfer to the baby via milk. In terms of the effects this drug can have on the baby, it depends on whether this mom has been using this drug or other opioids before. If the mom has used it before then the baby is accustomed to it and should not experience any adverse effects. However, if this is the first time the mom takes this class of medications and the baby is naive to the drug, then it can cause sedation and even apnea. It is important to monitor the baby closely for signs of sedation such as increased sleepiness and poor feeding. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please call the InfantRisk Center at (806)352-2519.
