Hello, I am in a bit of a panic. I was prescribed Bismuth Subcitrate Potassium, Metronidazole and Tetracycline Hydrochloride Capsules 4x per day for 10 days, but I am still breastfeeding my newly 2 year old. I told my doctor this, but after already starting the medication I called the pharmacy to double check that it was safe for breastfeeding, and they said to avoid breastfeeding for the full 10 days and two full days after. Is this accurate that I need to cut my toddler off cold turkey today?

I can understand your concern. The recommendation to avoid breastfeeding likely stems from the tetracycline prescription. While tetracycline is generally not recommended for long-term use in breastfeeding mothers with young infants, short-term use—especially with a toddler, rather than a newborn—should not be harmful. The risk is more significant for younger infants due to their developing systems, but for a toddler, the short duration of your treatment is unlikely to pose any significant risk
