  • Kidney infection and breastfeeding

I was prescribed Ciprofloxacin 500mg for 5 days one pill every 12 hours for a kidney infection. My son is 5 months old and breastfed when I asked the doctor if this was okay to breastfeed on she said "eh you can" that does not tell me if it is safe. Is this safe to take and still breastfeed?

    Dear mommy2twoboys,

This treatment (Ciprofloxacin 500 every 12 hours) in probably safe during breastfeeding as studies indicate the passage of this medication into breastmilk is low. Monitor the child for signs of gastrointestinal effects such diarrhea, which should then be reported to the pediatrician, if excessive.
