  • Levebon (levetiracetam)

I'm 32 weeks pregnant with epilepsy. I am taking Levebon (levetiracetam) 1500mg/day. Can I continue taking it after the birth during the breastfeeding? The dose has not been changed during pregnancy and is the same as my pre-pregnancy dose.

Levetiracetam is rated as an L2 which is generally compatible with nursing.

Maternal milk levels averaged 74 UM (12.6 mg/L) meaning it does get into the milk, but levels are low. The relative infant dose reported was 5.5%. The plasma levels in all the infants studied fell significantly following delivery, suggesting that far more is transferred in utero than via milk and that infants can clear it very quickly. While several studies have suggested no complications, in one recent study somnolence was reported in breastfed infants.
