  • Altace (ramipril)

I'm a type 1 diabetic that was prescribed altace many years ago to preserve kidney function (as a preventative I guess? My kidneys have always been fine when off of it). I've had three kids so I understand how dangerous it is to take during pregnancy. What about breastfeeding? I have a 17 month old that still nurses at night and some during the day. I'm concerned about not taking it for so long and would like to look Into starting again. Should I forget about it while breastfeeding? I used to take 5mg once a day. Thanks!

    Prinkpants:

Altace, as are all ACE-inhibitors, is generally contraindicated in the "last" trimester of pregnancy, as it can damage the nephrons in the kidney of the fetus. However, with a full term breastfeeding infant, there is little or no risk at all.

In a 17month old, I think it would quite compatible with breastfeeding.
