  • Amalgam filling removal

I have a related question to this thread. I just had an amalgam filling removed today and didn't realize there was concern with breastfeeding. They used suction, but no dental dam. They new I was breastfeeding and said there was no issues. I have some frozen breast milk stored up...Should I use those for a few days? Or just continue breastfeeding? I'm guessing any mercury absorbed by my body will take longer than a few days to get rid of it.

    Lauramin,

We would recommend that you continue to breastfeed. People are exposed to mercury all the time through fish consumption, and some light bulbs. We would recommend in the future to ask your dentist to use lots of cold water, high suction, a dam barrier and an alternate oxygen source if it is necessary to have mercury filling removed while breastfeeding, otherwise we recommend waiting until your infant is weaned and you are not pregnant.
