My doctor recently prescribed me, Phentermine (ADIPEX). However, it says on the bottle to not take while breastfeeding, however, my LO is 2 years old and only nurses before nap and before bed. Then a few times in between. My question is, since the Phentermine is a low dose, will it still affect my 2 yr old. I really do need to take this script so I can get surgery. What is recommended at this point? Should I wean him?

Mimi:
We don't have any data on Phentermine and its transfer into human milk. Its rather small in molecular weight so I'm sure some will pass into milk.
IN YOUR CASE, with a 2 year old child, and a low milk production at your stage, I'd suggest the risk to the infant is minimal to nil. I'd just observe for excitement, and insomnia.
