  • Guanfacine while breastfeeding 10 month old?

My daughter is almost 10 months. I take adderall for ADHD, but recently have started guanfacine to manage strong emotions from ADHD.

I don't want to stop breastfeeding my daughter, but will stop if guanfacine is unsafe while breastfeeding. Is there still no data about guanfacine and breastfeeding?

This is a drug that we are currently trying to study (if you would like to help future moms with this question, please consider donating some of your milk to our biorepository 806-352-2519). As of right now, our recommendation is to not breastfeed while taking guanfacine because this product has a low molecular weight, a high volume of distribution, and penetrates the CNS at high levels - it is likely to penetrate milk at significant levels meaning your baby is likely to be dosed as well.
