  • 60 mg Prednisone with no taper

Hi, I have Meniere's Disease and vestibular migraines, and when my symptoms flare up, my doctor prescribes 60 mg Prednisone per day for 7 days, and then stopping the meds without tapering off. I am breastfeeding my 5 week old baby. Is it safe to take the Prednisone in this specific way while breastfeeding? Thanks!

    musicandcats,

Prednisone is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 1.8-5.3% of your dose. Steroids are usually not a problem for short term use. We do recommend waiting 4 hours to nurse for doses greater than 40mg. Some moms are sensitive to these medications and it may reduce your milk supply. Monitor growth and weight gain.

Thank you! Is there any risk to the baby in stopping the Prednisone abruptly after 7 days, rather than tapering it off gradually?

        musicandcats,

        No, very little transfers.
